Police staff member thrown out of Gloucestershire force for having sex with ‘vulnerable woman’

A Gloucestershire police staff member has been sacked after having sex with a vulnerable young woman he met through his work at the force.

He was dismissed after starting the relationship with the woman during the course of his ‘public facing role’.

It was discovered he had also used police databases without a legitimate purpose.

The staff member – not an officer – was thrown out of the force without notice at a public misconduct hearing in May when the allegations came to light.

While the employee had referred the relationship to the Professional Standards Department, he was dismissed because he continued the relationship afterwards.

Despite being sacked, Gloucestershire police deemed he had not committed a criminal offence.

Gloucestershire police releases the outcomes of its public misconduct hearings for both officers and staff in the interests of transparency and openness.

A Gloucestershire police spokesman said the misconduct outcomes were published on the force website and hearings for officers are now mostly held in public.

“While these were serious matters they have all been dealt with firmly using established internal processes and we publish the results to be open and transparent,” he said.

“Ultimately we think that publishing the outcomes improves our legitimacy and should give people confidence in us.

“We have a professional standards department and an anti-corruption unit to identify wrongdoing in the organisation and actively encourage the public and staff to report concerns to us.”

In another hearing in the last year an officer received a written warning for accessing the force’s IT system for no policing purpose.

The officer was also found to have taken photos of images on their personal mobile phone and sent them onto other people.

The written warning will last for 12 months on the officer’s record.

Another officer also received a written warning for being absent from work on several days and sending inappropriate emails using the constabulary’s email system.

Gloucestershire Live is reporting on several more of these hearings over the coming week.
